Popular Spoons And Lures

At The Oak

We've received many e-mails asking for the most frequently used spoons in this area. We don't have time for e-mail replies, but will post them here...they are not in any specific order.

Note...You will notice that when a spoon pattern gets hot, other manufacturers copy it.

GetterDun...(aka Get R Done) Photo of DW SS prototype, now available at Narby's and Captains Cove

Gator......Photo (designed and photographed by Capt. Andy Bliss of the Cold Steel)

Yeck Coyote...The coyote is not in the Yeck catalog or website...one of the "Buc's" favorites and it was hot last year at Olcott. Description...55 size, half blue and half green with a lazer orange ladder (Narby's probably has them.)

Yeck Blue Thunder...Capt. Ron said the Yeck spoon he's been calling 'blue thunder' is actually the Yeck #205 purple thunder (he said it looks more blue than purple to him)

Chicken Wing...Silver Streak or Dream Weaver---gold spoon with a half of a black ladder back on one side of the spoon and a touch of orange running down the opposite side of the spoon on the face. The cup is a stock gold"...Photo

Gold Money Penny...Pirate 55 print spoon that looks very similar to a chicken wing, except it has a copper cup.

Habanero...NK HGLBW with green on yellow ladders and a yellow eye...Photo (originated and photographed by “Billy V")

Salmo's Window Spoon...Black/silver Pirate 55 with an H shaped ladder over a large silver diamond...Photo

NBK...(aka natural born killer) Stinger spoon...Photo

Capt. Songin's Half and Half...Gold belly and black back spoon with half the back covered with crinkle glow vertically on the spoon (like a mulatto patten).

Another Half and Half...Black/silver with a silver prism ladder cut in half & a green prism ladder cut in half and joined together, with a big glow eye...Photo

Silver/green tape...Pirate 55 smooth blade (a hammered 55 will do almost as well, but it's not a lite). On the outside cup (not the belly) attach a quarter inch strip of fluorescent green prism tape along one edge (not diagonal like a Northport Nailer).

"O's" Alewife...(courtesy Capt. John Oravec) "The alewife goes like this: 1.) Take the silver spoon of choice and cover the back side with brass tape. 2.) Go to Captain's Cove and get the oil slick tape (this tape looks like green/blue when you move it). 3.) Run a 1/4" strip along one edge and trim. 4.) Now butt a diagonal strip of stock glow/green prism to the alewife's back. 5.) Then add a bloody red prism eye to each side. This pattern accounts for a couple hundred fish annually, especially good in low light or 70' and deeper anytime. The key to it's versatility is the brass side which tones down the flash. Fish see plenty of flash in low light/clear water, yet they can see profile when sun angle is high. I hope anglers coming to the Oak always feel free to come down to Troutman & and talk tactics...Capt. John Oravec aka TROUTMAN"...Photo

This spoon pattern was originated by Capt. Dave Siegfried (“Tracker")... Photo (courtesy Skein Machine)

Improved Version: Captain's Cove has the makings for both the original Silver Streak 42 second spoon, as well an NK version...and they do have mail order. 1/8" black border on transparent green glaze on a Silver Streak or NK. One lazer ladder comes on a Streak, the NK is bare. Add your own glow ladder over the lazer ladder that comes on the Streak. Add both ladders, glow on top of lazer, to the NK version (green thunder). Add a big glow eye to the hook end of the spoon on both versions.

Dolphin...Pirate, NK or Stinger...Photo

"Penna" Dolphin...(invented by "Buc-a-roo" and he classes it as being one of his top producers) take a photoprint Pirate 55-S55 (primarily chartreuse & green with a silver belly) and put a diagonal strip of glow green tape across it, like the old Northport Nailer tape placement.

Improved Version...Pirate #55-21, add diagonal strip of green glow tape (the silver in the middle shines thru).

Sharky...NK 28, silver belly with black, pearl and orange back (pearl in the center, with black and orange edges)

Five of diamonds...The Pirate 44 five of diamonds has been one of the hottest board spoons for several years. On the 44, the whole inside is covered with a chartreuse prism decal. The decal has five 1/4 inch dull brownish red dots, spaced like an X...the same as on the playing card. Important...use a 1/4 inch punch and cut our out a bunch of 1/4 inch dots out of Witchcraft 405 fluorescent red tape...place over the dull dots. This is the way they should be...we ought to know, we designed them 25 years ago. (Captain's Cove and Narby's have the decals, Narby's has the silver hammered 44s...both have 405 fluorescent red tape)...Photo.
The Pirate 55 five of diamonds (not frequently used anymore) has 1/3 of the inside edge covered lengthwise with chartreuse prism. Five 1/4 to 1/3 inch fluorescent red dots are placed on the tape in a line...silver face

Yahoo/Wahoo...(courtesy Evan S. "Breakaway II") e-mail received 5/10/01: Hello Rip and Roc, Just thought I would drop you a quick note about a new spoon we have had great success with this year so far. We call it the "Yahoo" spoon-- new NK lite crinkle called "Wahoo" (kinda green/blue either side with silver middle) with a lazer ladder on top.  This was our best spoon for the LOC at the Bar for kings & cohos both as a slider/cheater and on the riggers. We took pops on it consistently for 4 days. Great color flash in the water looking thru our strike vision. Should be one hot spoon for those sunny days...Photo
