Making Lures

We've dabbled with lures through the years...Joe's first, the "Riebob" (ancient history) back in 1959 on Naples Creek. These were either orange, yellow or red plastic egg clusters (real trout eggs were illegal at this time). This was the first SOFT plastic bait of any kind to hit the market anywhere. They were quite effective and popular. They were then copied by Sutton Spoon Co. and marketed as the Sutton "Super-Soft" Egg Cluster. Lesson learned about copy cats...greed is a nasty thing.

In the late '60s we developed what we called the "Mystic Mask." This was a clear plastic spoon-bill with a pair of clips to fasten on an alewife's head. It came with a trailing double hook that went into the side of the bait (fresh 5" or 6" stuff was the best). It swam like a sawbelly and made slow 2' circles. We used it in the spring Seneca Lake Trout Derby and took, in successive years: third, second and first places...1971, 1972 & 1973. We sold this product to Pine Valley Spoons.

In the late '70s, when we lived in Victor NY, we originated the Pirate Spoons...now manufactured by Renosky Lures. We have no affiliation any more...we decided we enjoyed Charter fishing much more than making spoons.
