No current reports from the lake. I have not fished since Friday, although we are going to attempt to fish today if the weather allows us to. The last report we received was Monday and the water inside was warm (70 degrees at 100 feet) and 65 degrees down 140 at the 29 line...only a few fish were caught that day. No reports for Tuesday.
Tuesday, September 7, 2010
Three days of high winds has left the lake in shambles...warm water from top to bottom inside and a liquid desert offshore. There are a large number of staging salmon in 80 - 100 foot of water...all we need now is some cold water to move in to get them active again.
Saturday, September 4, 2010
A large number of kings remained on the inside on Friday, anywhere from 80 - 100 fow. Again, Spin Doctors remained the best producer: purple glow with purple mirage early and midday white on white with crinkle green seemed to be the best...a number of boats tried meat with little success. It does not look good for the next few days, but let's hope that the strong winds being from the west and south west will not cause a major change in the water temp. At the end of the day it was in the mid to high 40s down 80 feet. If the cold water stays, there should be some very good fishing when we are able to get back out.

How fast things change. The offshore fishery has fallen apart and the best game in town has been the inside for mature salmon. Your best bet is 90 - 120 foot of water both east and west. Spin-Doctors seem to be the best ticket on riggers, divers and coppers...some mentioned: white glow with black spots with the A-Tom-Mik pro/am, purple glow with purple mirage, white nuke with the purple mirage...riggers from 70 - 100, divers 220 - 260 and 400 coppers.
Wednesday, September 1, 2010
The inside fishing for staging salmon has finally started. The best yesterday was from 90 - 110 fow. Sunrise II and Free Spirit had an excellent day on mature kings...riggers from 80 - 100 and divers out 260. All of their fish came on spinners and flies both off of the riggers and divers. Free Spirit had one over 39 lbs (39-12) too bad his clients were not in the LOC.
Sunday, August 29, 2010
Yesterday was a repeat of the last couple days. Offshore was still the best bet, although the best fishing was a little closer 29 - 31. The same setups still seem to be working. With the calm weather the next few days, we are hopeful that staging kings will show up on the inside water soon.
Saturday, August 28, 2010
The lake continues to delay the staging of salmon for the fall run; it was 70 degrees down 100 feet in front of the harbor yesterday. The place to be was again off shore any where from the 29 - 33 east and west. A good mix of steelhead and kings, some mature, were taken in this area. Riggers from 50 - 90, divers 150 - 200 and 400 coppers. Productive spoons: silver green glow, Craig's steelhead, gold 42 second and nukes took their share of fish and 42/42s and white nukes with purple mirage flies worked well on the divers.
Friday, August 27, 2010
Only one boat fished yesterday and he told me that it was 68 degrees down 110 feet at the 24 line. So today will be a hunt and hope day, but with the stable weather predicted for the next few days, we are hoping the lake will setup as it should for this time of the year.
Thursday, August 26, 2010
The fishing remains off shore, but has begun to spread in from the 37. Reports of good catches as close as the 28 line are being mentioned. It is looking like it will all change again today with strong NW winds predicted.
Wednesday, August 25, 2010
If you did not know, we had a hell of a NE blow yesterday...it left the lake in shambles! The waves at the buoy off of Rochester were recorded at 10 feet, which really means close to 20. The inside water is cold and clear and we had to go to the 36 line to find good water and temp. There we found the same mix of steelhead and salmon we have been fishing over the past few weeks. The fish were biting riggers from 50 - 110, divers were working at 180 - 240, along with 400 coppers. Hot spoons were DW gold spook, half and half, Craig's steelhead spoon and Mag 42 second. Spin-Doctors were the silver 42/42 and black glow with A-Tom-Mik green hammers.
Another reminder that the Johnny V memorial tournament will be held Sunday September 5th and will benefit Orleans County Hospice. The entry will be $50, payout dependant on the number of entries. You can fish from any port you would like to, but entries must be weighed in at Lake Breeze Marina at 990 Point Breeze Rd in Oak Orchard. You must be in line by 3:00 PM and you can only bring 3 fish in your cooler to the weigh in station. Contact Bob Stevens of Sunrise II Charters for entry and more info...cell number 585-329-2463.
Also on the 7th of September, the 4th annual One Man tournament will be held which is dedicated honor of Curt Meddaugh who we unfortunately lost this year unexpectedly. He was a great contributor to the Lake Ontario fishery through LOTSA and participated in this event. The event will be one man, one boat, 2 rods total weight of 3 fish; entry will be $50 with 100% payback. Fishing time is from 6:00 AM - 11:00 AM, you must be in line to weigh fish by 12:00 noon at Lake Breeze Marina at 990 Point Breeze Rd in Oak Orchard. Offshore continues to be the only option for numbers of fish. Depending on the day, anywhere from the 31 - 34 east and west is producing good numbers of steelhead and immature kings. The inside water has produced a few mature kings, but nothing like we are use to. The question now remains, where are our mature big kings? Will they show up? This has happened in the past, then all of a sudden they are there in large numbers...now it is just a waiting game to see what will happen. As long as the offshore fishing holds, we will continue to produce good catches.
We would like to congratulate Randy Lane of Maine who caught the winning fish in the Orleans County Derby. His fish weighed in at 32 lbs. and 8 oz. and was caught on Reel Excitement Charters.
Friday, August 20, 2010
Fishing continues to be good with a mix of steelhead and kings. With the warm water again inside, offshore is the best bet. Fish are being taken from the 28 - 31 and most are fishing from the harbor west to the 20s. Riggers from 50 - 90, divers from 200 - 240 and 500 coppers all put you in the range for good hookups. The best bet yesterday were purples, DW Kevorkins, Stinger purple clowns and Spin Doctors with purple glow and A-Tom-Mik purple mirages behind them.
Thursday, August 19, 2010
I've received some communications that I am not giving enough information about the lures we are using to catch fish. So here is a list of what has been working. Spoons: DW gator both mags and regular, half and halves, gold 42 seconds, Steely canes, Craig's steelhead, NBK, Stinger ghosts, nukes, Silver Streak nukes both mags and regular. Spin-Doctors: 42/42, white nukes with purple mirage, purple glow with purple mirage, black glow with pickle sunshine and A-Tom-Mik green hammers. The location, rigger depths, divers and coppers were the same as the day before.
Wednesday, August 18, 2010
The fishing Monday was as challenging as it could be...waves of water moved through the area changing temp and conditions constantly and most captains called it early due to the un-fishable conditions. Tuesday was just the opposite...even though it was rough with a strong west wind, the conditions settled down and there where enormous schools of alewifes from the 28 - 29 from the harbor all the way to the 29 west. Large numbers of kings and steelhead were there feeding on that bait and most of the Captains had a very good day. Riggers 50 - 100, divers 160 - 200 and 400 coppers...all with the usual baits.
Sunday, August 15, 2010
Sorry, I have not been home for a few days to write the report. Well, the lake has flipped with cold water on the inside. The inside water Saturday afternoon was 57 degrees on the surface and 42 degrees only a short ways down. The best bite we heard of was from the 34 - 37 out front. The water was more stable in that area with the temp down 95 at 50 degrees and 74 degrees on the surface. Fish were coming 65 - 95 on the riggers, 260 and 240 divers and 500 coppers. A lot of the same baits mentioned in earlier reports continue to work.
Thursday, August 12, 2010
The report for today is short...although the inside water looks good first thing every morning, it has not been holding fish. The most productive place still remains from 31 - 34 with mixed year classes of kings and steelhead with the same set-ups and lures as mentioned in Tuesday's report.
Tuesday, August 10, 2010
Before we get into the meat of the fishing report I have a few announcements to make. First, the Johnny V. Annual fishing tournament will be held again this year on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, which will be Sept. 5th...there will be an awards event to follow, details forth coming. The event will be total weight of your 3 best fish with an entry of $50 per boat, number of places paid determined by number of boats entered. Proceeds to benefit pen rearing. You must be in line to weigh your fish at Lake Breeze Marina by 3:00 PM that day. This event is being run by Captain Bob Stevens of Sunrise II Charters.
Next, on the 8th of September, the 4th annual One Man tournament will be held and it will be dedicated in honor of Curt Meddaugh who we unfortunately lost this year unexpectedly. He was a great contributor to the Lake Ontario fishery through LOTSA and participated in this event. The event will be one man, one boat, 2 rods total weight of 3 fish, entry will be $50 with 100% pay back. Fishing time is from 6:00 AM - 11:00 AM, in line to weigh fish by 12:00 noon...number of places paid determined by number of boats entered. More details to follow.
Now to the fishing...the best was from the 30 - 32 x 10 - 16. The skips that have been hanging around seemed less plentiful yesterday and the big fish were very active. A number of good reports on big steelhead and kings in everyone's catches. Riggers from 65 - 110, divers from 240 - 280 and 500 coppers. Good spoons were DW mag gators, purple thunders, Rodney, gold 42-second spoons, Kevorkians, Stinger Ghosts, and gold 42s...Spin Doctor white nukes with purple mirage, 42/42s and Revelator cows (white with black dots) with A-Tom-Mik while Jean sleeps flies on them.
Monday, August 9, 2010
Fishing over the last few days has been spotty. There are some big kings and steelhead around, most are out from the 30 to the 34 line both east and west. But you do have to sort through a lot of skips and small kings to get to the big ones. It keeps the action up, but please be as careful as you can and return as many skips as possible to the lake...remember, they are our future big guys. As far as lures and rigger and diver sets, a lot of the same things have been working for the last few weeks.
Friday, August 6, 2010
Today's report is a mirror image of yesterday's...the inside remains very warm and the bulk of the fish being caught are from the 31 - 33 lines.
Thursday, August 5, 2010
The 31 - 33 line east and west still is the place that seems to be holding the most fish, Hot spoons are still the DW gator, in both the regular size and mag, the Stinger and Streak Nukes continue to be hot along with the Spin-Doctor White nuke with A-Tom-Mik purple mirage, gator/gator and 42/42 gold. Riggers are working 50 - 90, divers 220 - 260 and 400 coppers. The big kings are starting to show up in more numbers, as well they should...it is now August, a number of over 30 lb fish are being reported by the charters that have been fishing lately.
This from last Saturday: "We wanted to thank everyone who made this year's "Drew's Crew" tournament a success. This is how it ended up: 1st Place O'Fish'L Business with a total weight of 61# 9oz, 2nd Place to Troutman 2 with a total weight of 59# 8oz, 3rd Place to Reel Excitement total weight of 52# 9oz.....Hopefully everyone had a great time. Because of fantastic people with great hearts, this year's tournament was a success raising over 1,000 for JDRF. With your help and generosity, we will FIND A CURE for type 1 diabetes! Thanks again to all!...Drew and the Crew"

The lake came close to turning over but did not. With the south wind today the off shore water has set up again and a good mix of kings of all year classes and steelhead have move in along with a large amount of bait. The best seemed to be the 29 - 31 area from 12 - 8. Here is a report from Capt. Tom Hynes of Wharf Rat Charters: 31.5 - 33.5 on Sunday, a good catch all aged salmon with nice steelhead mixed in, Monday was the same. Riggers between 55 and 95, divers 215 to 240. Best lures were DW trannies and anything orange on the high rigger; divers with gator spin-doctor and the 42-second fly.
Monday, August 2, 2010
The east wind is taking its toll on the fishing. The bait has been pushed into 30 - 40 feet with cold water down only 25 - 30 (44 degrees). Off shore the fishing is spotty at best, with a few small pockets of fish. The best we heard was 27 - 28 at the 16 - 17 and not all boats that fished in that area did well. Here's hoping I can post a better report as the week goes on.
Sunday, August 1, 2010
We would like to congratulate the following winners of the "Drew's Crew" fishing tournament yesterday: finishing in order were Official Business, Troutman and Reel Excitement.
Cold water has moved back in and the inside with very heavy bait and some big fish being taken as proven by Official Business' 30 lb salmon taken yesterday. There also was a good bite out at the 27 and 14. The lure selection, depth on the riggers and divers has changed little over the last few days.
